SUMMARY:National Spirit Day
DESCRIPTION:Spirit Day is a day to show solidarity and support for lesbian\, gay\, bisexual\, transgender\, and queer youths who face bullying and harassment because of their identity. It is observed on the third Thursday of October every year. The day was started in 2010 by a Canadian teenager named Brittany McMillan\, who was inspired by the anti-bullying Pink Shirt Day in Canada. She asked people to wear purple\, the color of spirit on the Pride Flag\, in remembrance of youths who had committed suicide due to bullying. The day is now organized and promoted by GLAAD\, an organization that works to accelerate acceptance for the LGBTQ+ community. Millions of people\, including celebrities\, media outlets\, corporations\, landmarks\, sports teams\, and faith groups participate in Spirit Day by wearing purple and sharing messages of support on social media with the hashtags #SpiritDay and #ChooseKindness. Spirit Day is a day to celebrate the diversity and resilience of the LGBTQ+ community and to remind them that they are not alone. \nLearn more from Glaad.org.

SUMMARY:National Coming Out Day
DESCRIPTION:National Coming Out Day is a day to celebrate and support the LGBTQ+ community and their courage to live openly and authentically. It is observed on October 11 every year\, which is the anniversary of the Second National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights in 1987. The day was founded in 1988 by Robert Eichberg and Jean O’Leary\, who believed that coming out was a powerful way to challenge homophobia and oppression. The day is organized and promoted by the Human Rights Campaign\, which provides resources and guides for anyone who wants to come out or support someone who does. \nFor more information\, visit the Human Rights Campaign \nThe Trevor Project’s Coming Out Handbook

SUMMARY:Coming Out Day (National Event) - 2022
DESCRIPTION:Coming out can happen in many forms\, from telling your family and friends about your sexuality to simply correcting a stranger about your gender identity. No two coming out stories are exactly the same; your coming out will be shaped by the supports that you have in school\, at home\, or in your community\, and the privileges you hold in other aspects of your identity. Today is a day to celebrate and recognize your coming out journey(s) and how they may skip around or change over time.

SUMMARY:Day of Silence - 2022
DESCRIPTION:My Silence\, My Story.\nThe GLSEN Day of Silence is a national student-led demonstration where LGBTQ students and allies  all around the country—and the world—take a vow of silence to protest the harmful effects of harassment and discrimination of LGBTQ people in schools. \nStarted in the mid 90’s by two college students\, the Day of Silence has expanded to reach hundreds of thousands of students each year. Every April\, students go through the school day without speaking\, ending the day with Breaking the Silence rallies and events to share their experiences during the protest and bring attention to ways their schools and communities can become more inclusive.

SUMMARY:Mama Gloria: The Story of Legendary Trans Activist\, Gloria Allen
DESCRIPTION:Special Fundraiser for Safe Schools Desert Cities \n \nUnitarian Universalist Church of the Desert\npresents… \n \nBUY TICKETS ONLINE HERE \n“THE DOCUMENTARY IS FRONT-LOADED WITH LOVE\, FORGIVENESS\, TOLERANCE\, AND MORE HIDDEN HISTORY THAN YOU CAN POSSIBLY TAKE IN ALL AT ONCE. IT’S A REAL STANDOUT STORY BOTH BECAUSE THE SUBJECT IS SO FASCINATING AND THE REVELATIONS ABOUT CHICAGO ARE ENDLESS.” \nTHIRD COAST REVIEW \nJoin UUCOD and the Coachella Valley LGBTQ community in this online event\nSaturday May 15 @ 2 – 4 pm\nTickets $10 – Additional Donations Accepted\nLuchina Fisher and Mama Gloria will lead a discussion following the film \nDirector’s Statement \nI was introduced to Gloria because she was looking for someone to help her write her memoir. But after meeting her\, I knew that her story would speak to people\, because it spoke to me. As a Black woman filmmaker raising a biracial transgender daughter\, I see Gloria’s story through a unique lens. For me\, it’s personal and it’s urgent. One day while I was filming Gloria in Chicago\, my daughter sent me a text saying that her life was “half way done.” Gia had read online that the average life expectancy for a Black trans woman in Washington D.C.\, was 32. It was at that moment that I truly understood why I am making this film. It’s a gift that I want to show my daughter and other young trans people — so they can imagine themselves growing old and having a long\, meaningful life. ~ Luchina Fisher \nMama Gloria – A Documentary Film\nDirected by Luchina Fisher \n \nSynopsis \nMama Gloria is a feature documentary about Gloria Allen\, a trailblazing 74-year-old Black transgender activist who started a charm school for homeless trans youth and is now aging with joy and grace. It is the story of a mother’s love — the love that Gloria’s mother had for her and the love that Gloria has for her chosen children. And it is fueled by the love that filmmaker Luchina Fisher has for her teenage transgender daughter\, Gia. \nAt a time when Black transgender women face escalating violence and make up the majority of transgender people murdered each year\, Gloria’s story is an inspiring portrait of aging seldom seen. \n

SUMMARY:Coming Out Day (National Event) - 2019
DESCRIPTION:National Coming Out Day (NCOD) is an annual LGBTQawareness day observed on October 11.  Founded in the United States in 1988\, the initial idea was grounded in the feminist and gay liberation spirit of the personal being political\, and the emphasis on the most basic form of activism being coming out to family\, friends and colleagues\, and living life as an openly lesbian or gay person.  The foundational belief is that homophobia thrives in an atmosphere of silence and ignorance\, and that once people know that they have loved ones who are lesbian or gay\, they are far less likely to maintain homophobic or oppressive views. \nIn more recent years\, the idea of the “Lesbian and Gay Community” has been largely subsumed into the idea of the LGBT community\, and the idea of “coming out” expanded to not only include the voluntary self-disclosure of a lesbian\, gay\, or bisexual sexual orientation\, but also transgender\, genderqueer\, or other non-mainstream gender identity.

SUMMARY:Day of Silence - 2019
DESCRIPTION:About GLSENs Day of Silence\n\n\n\n\n\nGLSENs Day of Silence is a national day of action in which students across the country vow to take a form of silence to call attention to the silencing effect of anti-LGBT bullying and harassment in schools. \n\n\n\n\n\nHistory\n\n\n\n\n\nFounded in 1996\, the Day of Silence has become the largest single student-led action towards creating safer schools for all\, regardless of sexual orientation\, gender identity or gender expression. From the first-ever Day of Silence at the University of Virginia in 1996\, to the organizing efforts in over 8\,000 middle schools\, high schools\, colleges and universities across the country in 2008\, its textured history reflects its diversity in both numbers and reach.\n\n\n\n\n\nOrganizing for Day of Silence\n\n\n\n\n\nOrganizing a Day of Silence (DOS) activity or event can be a positive tool for change-both personally and community-wide. By taking a vow of silence\, you’re making a powerful statement about the important issue of anti-LGBT bullying\, and when you organize others to join you that message becomes stronger. Discover ways of organizing your event here. \n\n\n\n\n\nYour Rights\n\n\n\n\n\nWhile you DO have a right to participate in GLSENs Day of Silence between classes and before and after school\, you may NOT have the right to stay silent during instructional time if a teacher requests for you to speak. According to Lambda Legal\, “Under the Constitution\, public schools must respect students’ right to free speech. The right to speak includes the right not to speak\, as well as the right to wear buttons or T-shirts expressing support for a cause.” However\, this right to free speech doesn’t extend to classroom time. “If a teacher tells a student to answer a question during class\, the student generally doesn’t have a constitutional right to refuse to answer.” We remind participants that students who talk with their teachers ahead of time are more likely to be able to remain silent during class.  Find more Lambda Legal advice here.\n\n\n\n\n\nLegal Help: Report It! \n\n\n\n\n\nIf you think your rights are not being respected\, or want to report your experience of resistant administration\, click here to report it. GLSEN and Lambda Legal will review your situation.\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Truth about the Day of Silence\n\n\n\n\n\nAs GLSENs Day of Silence continues to grow\, some people have confused the mission and goals of the Action. Clear up any misinformation by reading The Truth about the Day of Silence.

SUMMARY:Coming Out Day (National Event) - 2018
